The third largest city of Spain and the capital of the coast. A short drive or train journey away, make sure you go beyond the international airport and into the city. The cultural and cosmopolitan centre provide days of discovery in its shaded streets. Find the birthplace of Picasso, climb the steps of the castle of Gibalfaro, overlook the famous harbour and see the docking of the world's cruise ships.

For those of you who do not want to venture as far afield as Granada or Sevilla, the city of Málaga will give you a taste of architectural grandeur and Mediterranean tradition. Well signposted by road and easily accessible by train, a good way to see the city once you are there is by Tranvia, an old-fashioned tram carriage which is actually a tour bus. Make your way to the main post office (correos) to catch it and it will take you through the main sights of the city, perhaps helping you decide which ones you would like to revisit for a closer look.

If the Alcazaba is your main interest, you will find it in the old sector of the city. A fortress of Islamic architecture which dates back to 1065 and many other buildings of interest share the sites nearby. Behind the Alcazaba is the archaeological museum and the castle of Gibralfaro, of Pheonician origin but later reconstructed by the Moors.

The cathedral, constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries is an excellent example of Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The Parish Church of Sagrario has been nominated a National Monument and the Roman Theatre which was discovered in 1951 is just another of the many sites which offer more of an insight into the Roman occupation. It is believed that parts of the Roman Theatre were used by the Arabs to assist in the construction of the Alcazaba.

Other buildings that form the basis of Málaga´s heritage are the Churches of Santiago, El Cristo de la Salud, San Juan, Los Martires, the Virgen de la Victoria sanctuary and the Episcopal Palace.

As well as the historical aspect, Málaga provides a thriving backdrop for your shopping expedition. Commercial centres or traditional shops, whatever you require can be found in Málaga. And of course if it´s dining or nightllife you´re after, you´re in the right place.
