Costa Del Sol Property
One of the most picturesque and frequently undiscovered spots on the Costa del Sol,
Benhavís is surrounded by mountains and provides, as well as beautiful scenery, some of the best
gastronomy in the area.
A typical whitewashed village, with just 1,756 residents, it was founded toward the end of
the 11th century and named for the son of one of the Arab Kings. Hence the king´s name ´Havis´
and ´Ben´meaning son of.
The forces of Ferdinand and Isabella succeeded the Arabs in 1495 but the Moorish remains
are still in evidence, mainly within the legendary Montemayor Castle. It´s underground passages
are said to be among the longest ever built, stretching 10kms.
The Torre de los Leones (Lions Tower) situated next to the source of the Guadalmina River
was the main Arab fortress built as part of the walled defences. Easily accessible from the
coast road, Benahavís maintains the air of a secluded mountain retreat.
Stroll around the unspoiled valleys and waterfalls or explore the
many mountain trails on horseback and, when you are ready to eat,
you have a choice of restaurants which provide a range of individual
cuisine which has become locally and internationally renowned.
